2018 dallas cowboys roster4/15/2024 The preseason pitted rookied UDFA Charvarius Ward against fellow undrafted free agent Donovan Olumba, both having a strong upside. More intriguing comes by way of what happened, or rather did not happen, in the fifth spot. With the move of Jones down to the position full-time, he'll line up opposite Awuzie with the depth chart still being determined in the slot, with Brown and Lewis still fighting for supremacy there. This is one of the easier projections considering we know who definitively who the top four corners on the team are. Instead of choosing between the two, the Cowboys kept both, insuring their now-deep LB unit stays that way. The Cowboys selected Chris Covington later in this year's draft and while he has upside, he was up against veteran March-Lillard, who was solid last season and looks to have built upon that. What was a disturbingly thin corps to end 2017 is anything but to begin 2018, but it's not without non-injury related question marks. Wilson himself is flying under the radar but the fact is, he's still flying - and not at a low altitude, either. The beauty of it all is they also went out and grabbed Thomas away from the Green Bay Packers this past spring, and he's already putting on a show this August. That can't be an assumption to occur though, as his recent history has shown, so the first-round grab on Vander Esch will serve as both insurance for Lee and a wound-salve for the departed Anthony Hitchens. Job numero uno for this LB corps is keeping Lee available for the full ride in 2018. Who gets shown the door in October is anyone's guess in mid-August. The real question will come by way of Irving, set to serve a four-game suspension to start the season, who will be instantly activated once his ban is wrapped. For now, Jones will instead be carried on the active 53-man roster, but don't expect him to make the "gameday 46" anytime soon. It should be the also-released Caraun Reid, but time will tell. The goal was to re-sign the released Brian Price in his roster spot, but Price is heading to the Oakland Raiders on waivers, so expect another signing here soon for the backup 1-tech. He came on strong at the back end of 2017, and his ailment had him pegged for injured reserve until a monkey wrench was thrown into their plans. I would have loved to insert Datone Jones into this conversation, and he was, prior to suffering a knee injury recently that could sideline him for a bit. Now, add to that the clear-and-obvious progression of Charlton, the impressive play of Armstrong in his first preseason, etc etc - and it's not hard to see why the hype surrounding them is what it is. Lawrence is the anchor to what could be a great defensive front for 2018, but the addition of Gregory back to the fold instantly makes it a night terror for opposing QBs. (Photo: Matthew Emmons, USA TODAY Sports) That said, it's time to see what the final 53-man roster looks like for the Cowboys. Frederick will remain on the active roster, and that bodes well for a potential return soon. He's a dead ringer to for the 3-tech role, but others aren't giving up that fight so easily.Īlso sidelined is All-Pro center Travis Frederick, leaving very real questions about depth behind Joe Looney, and they still need to figure out the issue of safety depth. It'll be interesting to see who steps up going forward, but some under-the-radar talent has already begun to do just that over the past two weeks, plus Maliek Collins has now returned from a broken foot and is now taking reps with the first team the expectation being he'll suit up in the opener against the Carolina Panthers. They'll begin 2018 without defensive end David Irving, who continues to battle personal issues and has yet to report to training camp, and will also be suspended for a total of four games to start the season - his second suspension in as many years. The Cowboys need to find successors to the record-breaking production and leadership both Bryant and Witten provided, and the picture is beginning to take shape at both positions. What came next was a maelstrom of headlines, dominated by the release of All-Pro wideout Dez Bryant and the retirement of future Hall of Fame tight end Jason Witten, creating a vortex atop the depth chart for both positions going forward. It's been over seven months since the team last played a game, having missed the playoffs on the heels of a disappointing 9-7 finish to the 2017 season. The preseason is officially wrapped, and it's time to start looking at who'll still be employed by the Dallas Cowboys come September.
